Game streaming plays into Qualcomm’s interest in networking, of course, the company really wants that you use 5G millimeter-wave networkes,but it also sidesteps the availability of games on Android with Xbox Game Pass, Steam, and Google Stadia. In Asian countries, special Android-based gaming phones are very popular, and Android phones often become the primary platform even for MMO gaming.īut Qualcomm has a way to tackle the whole question: the question of streaming. It’s hard to explain why it’s not true in Asia. The US gaming community disdains Android, too, so far, and is not the one who is on the first. One of the big things the G3x does against it is that it’s running Android. It’s partly for game streaming, so you don’t have to play Android games on it. Qualcomm has the opposite of a rival: the hardware has also been developed with Razer, which has better gaming credentials than Qualcomm. It doesn’t match the performance of Qualcomm and Android game consoles. This is a potentially higher performance than a chip developed to take a small, quiet smartphone. The G3x platform lets and maybe even expects a fan. Probably the reason for not running the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is thermals. The G3x Gen 1 has a Qualcomm Kyro CPU, Adreno GPU and 5G Modem-RF system, so there are no parts or speeds on the spec sheet.
The number of X1 cores could be different between the 888+ and the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, or whether it’s so fast as the 8 Gen 1 or more then just more fast. While Qualcomm isn’t releasing technical details of its cores and speeds a strange choice for a gaming product, I found out the primary cores are the ARM Cortex-X1 at a clock speed high enough to require a fan. The G3x Gen 1 looks like an overclocked Snapdragon 888.

Using a USB-C port, you can play 4K TVs or AR glasses, and a built-in 1080p webcam lets you stream while playing. The controller has been set up specifically to be Xbox-compatible. It has analog sticks on both sides of the screen, a gamepad and action buttons. The G3x HDK is a black handheld with 120Hz OLED screen and 6000mAh battery. With a high frame rate, the Qualcomm DSc has already built the G3x Gen 1 platform, with chipset and the Snapdragon G3x Handheld Developer Kit that allows developers to test its capabilities and enjoy the benefits of the controllers, massive thermal headroom and high frame rate screen. The platforms will be built under the Razer brand and then, in 2022, can be rolled out by a competitor. It’ll be launched at retail with a developer’s kit, with Qualcomm hoping its new G3x gaming platform gets into mainstream markets. “This platform is designed to be the PC-based game technology,” says Qualcomm.Īs far as you can tell from this, this device will not be sold to consumers at all.
